CHBC Family and Friends,

The primary job of your pastors is to minister to you through the Bible and prayer. It is a joy to feed you spiritually on Sundays and Wednesdays, but we also want to equip you to feed yourself during the week. We have a level of confidence in these resources to aid you through sound, biblical teaching.

Worship at CHBC – A Reminder

The church is not a building people meet together in, but a people who gather to worship Jesus Christ as Lord. This gathered people exists for the glory of God. That is not God on an ego trip. The church is people who have been redeemed by His sacrificial love as a demonstration to the demons and Satan of God’s immense power and worth (Eph. 3:10-21). As we gather, please remember:

  • Be aware of your own health as you prepare to come to Sunday School and worship
  • Worship with us online if you are experiencing the symptoms of COVID-19, or other transmissible illnesses
  • While you are present wash your hands, and do not touch your eyes, nose, or mouth

Explore CHBC – January 30, and February 6

Explore CHBC is the membership orientation class offered by Capitol Hill Baptist Church for guests to help introduce them to the history, vision, and mission of CHBC. The class lasts three weeks and meets at 9 AM in the church conference room. There are two weeks left for the class, so it is not too late to begin participating. Pastor Mark is the facilitator of this class. During the sessions you will learn about biblical church membership, why it is highly valued at CHBC, and what remaining steps there are to becoming a member.

Lord’s Supper – January 30, during AM Worship

CHBC observes the Lord’s Supper every other month. A time is given during the morning worship gathering for the church to reflect upon their need for Christ as Savior and to express the gospel to one another and the world by eating and drinking the elements of the Lord’s Supper as a remembrance of Christ’s sacrifice. Any person who has put their faith in Jesus Christ and who has been immersed in believers’ baptism is invited to participate in the taking of the Lord’s Supper. We should each heed the Apostle Paul’s instructions in 1 Cor. 11:27-30, “Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord. 28 But a man must examine himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For he who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself if he does not judge the body rightly.”

Members’ Meeting – January 30, at 6 PM

CHBC is a church that is ruled by the congregation, led by pastors, and served by deacons. As such, we have members’ meetings once per quarter for the church to hear from elected committees what action is needed by the church in order to steward our God-given resources. In the January meeting we will hear a report on the fourth quarter financials of 2021, consider proposals from the Budget and Finance Committee, be asked to elect new members to our committees and teams, and approve new members.

Scripture of the Month

Each week CHBC says aloud a passage of Scripture during our morning worship gathering. This is done for two reasons. First, we are commanded in Scripture to encourage one another with the Word of God. Second, we want to emphasize the spiritual discipline of Scripture memory. The Scripture we will say and memorize for the month of January is Genesis 1:1-2, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.”  You can receive a text to your phone with this verse set to music by texting the word “CHBCVERSE” to the number (302) 207-SONG (7664).

A Moment in Church History

On January 27, 417, Pelagius is excommunicated from the church for teaching against original sin. In excommunicating Pelagius, the church reaffirmed the concept of original sin, and man’s need for the righteousness of Christ to save. Learn more about what happened on this date in church history by following this link: Today in Church History.

Church, we do not need to struggle against one another. Our struggle is against the rulers and powers of the demonic world. That does not mean we should not hold one another accountable for sin, but it does mean we are not at odds with one another. Pray for one another, during moments of struggle. The church is a community of believers. We need loving accountability, and we need each other to hold up the shield of our faith at times.

Ephesians 6:12-13

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.”
