God’s Vision for CHBC: 3 Piers, 3 Pillars, and 3 Purposes

3 Piers: The Centrality of the Scriptures, The Lordship of Christ, and the Glory of God

Romans 15 sets a course of Biblical church unity. In the main verse of the section, we read this, “so that with one accord you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,” (Romans 15:6). The churches first purpose, and therefore an essential foundation for the church, is to glorify God. For the church to be able to do this, there must be one accord and one voice.

Biblical unity precedes unified glorification of God. For CHBC to claim that it is essential that we glorify God, means we must be committed to pursuing unity with one another. Unity is not an object or a goal, but an outcome of believers who pursue Christ together. Christians do not pursue unity like they pursue a prize. They pursue Christ who has unified all believers in Himself, and who produces a like-mindedness with Him and the Father.

The Glory of God is fundamental to the existence of the church. There are many ways in which believers individually and corporately glorify God. But God is never glorified when His church is not in one in Christ.

By His Grace and For His Glory,

Pastor Mark

God’s Vision for CHBC: 3 Piers, 3 Pillars, and 3 Purposes

3 Piers: The Centrality of the Scriptures, The Lordship of Christ, and the Glory of God

He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. 18 He is also head of the body, the church;” (Col. 1:17-18a). Foundational to being a Biblical church is the fact that Christ is head of the Church. Christians submit themselves to Jesus first, and the human leadership of the church second, and only as they imitate Christ. Jesus Christ is the one who leads the church, sets its practices, and determines its teachings.

“The headship of Christ is done in love. “For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body,” (Eph. 5:23). The leadership of Christ over the body of Christ comes from the fact that He holds all things together, and from the fact that He is Savior.

The church gladly surrenders to the Lordship of Christ as a community of people gathered in worship. When the church gathers faithfully, practices Biblical worship (singing the Word, preaching the Word, praying the Word, practicing the Ordinances, exercising Church discipline, and proclaiming the gospel to the lost), God is honored, and Christ is worshiped as Lord.

Pastor Mark
