God’s Vision for CHBC: 3 Piers, 3 Pillars, and 3 Purposes

3 Purposes: Equipping Believers, Exalting Christ, and Extending the Gospel

“Therefore, as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude.” (Col. 2:6-7). Exalting Christ is a Christian lifestyle, not a church activity.

Christians gather to worship Jesus Christ as Lord because we are commanded to do so, because we need one another, and because we desire to express our worship of God with our brothers and sisters in Christ. But that gathering is an overflow of our personal treasuring of Christ. A Christian values Christ above all things, and desires to live in such a way that others see that lifestyle and are moved to decide for themselves what they will do with Christ.

Paul uses the phrase “overflowing with gratitude,” at the end of v. 7. To exalt Christ is to live with gratitude toward God for providing Christ as our substitute, and as our sympathetic High Priest. Our gratitude should be what motivates a lifestyle of worship, obedience to God’s Word, the sharing of our faith with unbelievers, and the desire to serve the body with our spiritual gifts.

God’s Vision for CHBC: 3 Piers, 3 Pillars, and 3 Purposes

3 Purposes: Equipping Believers, Exalting Christ, and Extending the Gospel

“And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ;” (Eph. 4:11-12). Equipping Believers is a mandate of the church. But equipping is not an end.

The saints referred to in Ephesians 4:12 are those who have trusted in Jesus Christ and become God’s followers, heirs, and adopted children. They are to do the work of service. What kind of service? Serving the body of Christ so that it is built up into strength of faith, purity of doctrine, obedience of living, and evangelistically concerned.

Those whom God has given to the church to be heralds of truth, teachers of doctrine, and models of evangelism are to equip all the believers to do the work of ministry to one another, and in the community in which they live. The church does not gather to have a crusade or a conference. The church gathers to be encouraged after a week of ministry in a hostile world, to be exhorted to go again into the world as ambassadors of Christ, and to be equipped with the doctrinal truths and practical skills to be effective for the place of service in which God as appointed them. Men and women equipped to be spiritual influencers in their professions, mothers and fathers to be equipped to raise their children in the Lord, children and teens to be faithful students and missionaries on their campuses. Wherever God has sent us on Monday, looking toward a re-gathering on the next Sunday for more encouragement, exhortation, and equipping.
