God’s Vision for CHBC: 3 Piers, 3 Pillars, and 3 Purposes

3 Piers: The Centrality of the Scriptures, The Lordship of Christ, and the Glory of God

1 Timothy 3:15 says, “but in case I am delayed, I write so that you will know how one ought to conduct himself in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth.” The church is to be a pillar and support of the truth. The people of God are foundational evidence that God is the ultimate reality, and all other reality follows from Him.

God’s reality is evident in creation and common graces, but it is explicit in the divine revelation of the Scriptures and of the Person of Jesus Christ. The Bible speaks of Jesus. So, the two are inextricably linked in revealing God. The people of God, the Church, are the repository of this truth.

The Bible declares itself to be God-breathed. Because it is from God it is without error, and it is incapable of error. The church correctly clings to the Bible as its sole source of authority. This is why we demand that it is the Scripture that is central to the church’s teaching and worship. “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth,” (2 Tim. 2:15).

The centrality of the Scriptures is the first of three piers upon which CHBC is grounded. We consider these piers essential and non-negotiable. The Bible informs everything we are and everything we do. Without it, we could not rightly claim to be the ‘church of the living God.’

God’s Vision for CHBC: 3 Piers, 3 Pillars, and 3 Purposes

3 Purposes: Equip Believers, Exalt Christ, and Extend the Gospel

15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation,” (Mark 16:15). The Lord Jesus Christ commanded the church to take the gospel to the ends of the earth. What a glorious responsibility. At CHBC we embrace the Great Commission from our Lord in several ways.

Local ministry that is gospel-centered. Sunday School leadership is regularly reminded to expect unbelievers to be present and to make sure Christ is the central hero of every passage of Scripture which is taught. AWANA is a means of outreach on a weekly basis to children. Vacation Bible School is an annual attempt to evangelize children in our community. Student Worship on Wednesdays is discipleship oriented, but always calling students to trust in Christ. Language Learners is a weekly ministry to reach those who are seeking help with the English language, as a means to introduce unbelievers to the gospel. Other outreach ministries occur like Project Angel Tree, and community ministry efforts in which the desire is to intersect unbelievers with the gospel.

Partnering with frontline ministries that reach the unloved and unwanted is another way CHBC is part of obeying the command to preach the gospel to all creation. Supporting the ministry of pregnancy centers, prison ministries, displaced children, mothers in crisis, and addiction recovery spreads the gospel in our community outside the walls and direct reach of CHBC.

Supporting the Cooperative Program of the Southern Baptist Convention allows us to obey the Great Commission by supporting missionaries who serve North America, as well as every other continent on earth. Every person who tithes to CHBC is also supporting the preaching of the gospel to all of creation.

Providing opportunities for members to go on short term mission trips is another way CHBC attempts to fulfill the call to global missions. This year we will help send people into OKC, to Belize, to Mexico, and to Utah. Pray for God to raise up these short-term missionaries, as well as to call out some to make it a full-time pursuit.

This samples the way CHBC is fulfilling the purpose of Extending the Gospel to our neighbors and the nations. Thank you, Capitol Hill, for being a church on mission at all times. This Sunday is March Forth Sunday. We will celebrate the gospel focus of the mission outside the walls of CHBC.

By His Grace and For His Glory,

Pastor Mark
