When we use the word apostle we should think in two specific ways. The first way the word apostle is used in the Bible, and ought to be thought of by us, is in reference to the twelve original apostles of Jesus. These apostles had a specific purpose for a limited period of time.
The qualifications for apostles in this first sense are: (1) to have been a witness of the resurrected Christ (1 Corinthians 9:1), (2) to have been explicitly chosen by the Holy Spirit (Acts 9:15), and (3) to have the ability to perform signs and wonders (Acts 2:43; 2 Corinthians 12:12). The responsibility of the twelve apostles, laying the foundation of the church, would also argue for their uniqueness. Two thousand years later, we are not still working on the foundation.
The second way we should think of apostle is in relationship to all followers of Jesus. We are in a very real way all apostles. Why would I say this? Because the word apostle means, “one who is sent out.” We are all to be His ambassadors (Matthew 28:18-20; 2 Corinthians 5:18-20). We are all to be “ones who are sent out” (Acts 1:8). We are all to be preachers of the good news (Romans 10:15).
We are sent ones. Sent to do what? We are sent to make disciples, as Matthew 28:18-20 clearly says. Disciples evangelize, teach, and send out other disciples. Jesus starting a sending movement. Followers of Jesus are tools through which Jesus keeps calling and sending followers.
As we focus on this three-fold focus for 2026, keep thinking in terms of Searching, Serving, and Sending. We are emphasizing this for the year, not just to move on to something different in 2027, but to establish this as a pattern of our living. It should become prominent parts of our Christian DNA. You are a Christian. A Christian is aware of those who are lost. A Christian serves their brothers and sisters in Christ by their commitment and gifts. A Christian urges fellow followers of Jesus to be faithful ambassadors and preachers of the good news. These are not activities we decide to engage in. It is who we are.

Pastor Mark
