Next Steps - Go On Mission

12.22.16 | by CHBC Staff

    Missions: Because Jesus Said So

Since the first century, Christians have been packing their bags and taking the gospel around the world. Why? Because this is what Jesus told His disciples to do. In Mark 16:15, Jesus said, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation."

At Capitol Hill, we are committed to advancing the gospel and making disciples in around the world. Jesus commanded us to do so, and because we love Jesus, we cheerfully obey. We want you to join with us.

Missions: For The Joy of the World

Our commitment to spread the gospel around the world is not only rooted in our love for Jesus, but also in our love for all peoples. Right now as you read this, there are billions of people who have never heard the name of Jesus, and even more who do not worship Him.

Because these people do not worship Jesus, they are missing out on the greatest joy in the world. To know, love, and follow Jesus is to experience "fullness of joy." (John 15:11) In fact, the hope of the Old Testament is that the "nations be glad and sing for joy" because of the saving power of God (Psalm 67).

MISSIONS: For the Glory of God

Above all else, our motivation for missions is the glory of God. John Piper once said that, "Missions exists because worship doesn't." We go so that people may worship God - for their joy, and for the glory of God. Worship is, after all, acknowledging the worth and majesty and beauty of God. Psalm 96:3 says it this way, “Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples.” Missions is declaring to all people how glorious God is an inviting others to glorify Him. He is worthy of the worship of all people.

    Get Involved: Pray

In Matthew 9:38 Jesus told His disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”

Want to get involved immediately in Missions? Pray. Pray that there would be missionaries raised up from our church, and from other churches. Pray for missionaries on the field. Pray for missionaries with your children at bedtime. Pray that your children would go. Pray, not asking God if you should go, but rather, why you should stay.

    Get Involved: Give

Mission takes money. Money to train missionaries. Money to translate and print Bibles in the language of unreached peoples. Money for passports, plane tickets, and ground transportation. Money for food, translators, backpacks, and malaria medicine.

Southern Baptist's decided in 1925 to pool their resources to finance their missionaries, believing that our 44,000 churches can do more together than we can apart. Through our Cooperative Program giving, support over 4,000 missionaries across the world. Find out more about how you can support missions here and pray about how you will give.

    Get Involved: Go

There is no option: every Christian is commanded to make disciples as they go about their lives. At Capitol Hill, we have mission projects at the church, in the city, in North America, and internationally. We want every Christian, if at all possible, to partner with us on mission in all of these areas.

Let us encourage you, if at all possible, come with us on an international mission trip. It will change your world, your perspective, and your life. And more importantly, it you will be a small part of the fulfillment of Christ's final marching orders for His people. Nothing is more satisfying than seeing someone come to worship and adore Jesus Christ, even if they do so in a language you do not understand.
