Finishing Well
As we come to the last Sunday of 2018 it is hard not to reflect over what has occurred in our lives, and perhaps to think about those missed opportunities for failures that have also been part of the year. 52 weeks have come and gone. Has this year been dedicated to the Lord? Did you give yourself to God’s Word the way you had hoped? Were there broken relationships you left without being mended? Did you memorize the Scriptures you intended to? Was church the priority it needed to be in your life?
It would be easy to simply walk away from any deep self-reflection and simply chalk it up to, “Nobody’s perfect!” But, as Christians we do not have to slough off our mistakes and make little of our sins. We can see them and claim them for what they are, rebellion and treason against a Holy and Just God. We do that, not because we are self-loathing, or we think self-degradation brings some kind of merit before God. No, we do that because those are precisely the sins that Jesus died for. The gospel tells us that we can admit our sin, confess our sin, and be forgiven of our sin because Jesus is righteous and took our place.
As you come to the close of 2018 and before you awake to a brand new year claim the gospel. Through the gospel we can approach the last Sunday of 2018 knowing that we have been less than our best, but we can finish strong. The grace of God allows us to start today fresh and hit the finish line in full stride. Not because God thinks our sinful attitudes and choices are no big deal, but because when we confess, repent and trust Jesus those sins were destroyed on the cross. So, regardless of how this year has been for you spiritually, if today you are trusting in Christ, you can finish well, with no regret.
