God’s Vision for CHBC: 3 Piers, 3 Pillars, and 3 Purposes

3 Piers: The Centrality of the Scriptures, the Lordship of Christ, and the Glory of God

All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work. (2 Tim. 3:16-17)

A church does not determine its existence. The church is God’s plan flowing from God’s good and wise will, and therefore must follow God’s design. So, when CHBC thinks about the church we start with God. Where does the church find her purpose and her convictions? Since the intent is to discover that from God, then we discover it in His Word, the Bible.

Therefore, the base of our foundation as a church is the Centrality of the Scriptures. All Scripture is inspired by God (2 Tim. 3:16). This means that it is infallible, or incapable of error. If it is incapable of error, then it contains no error (it is inerrant).

The Bible is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in our righteousness (2 Tim 3:16). God has provided all that we need for life and godliness by the revelation of Christ through the Word of God (2 Pet. 1:3). The Bible is sufficient for our sanctification (John 17:17). God’s Word equips us for every good work (2 Tim. 3:17) because it is superior to the wisdom of man (1 Cor. 1:20).

We do not worship the Bible; we worship the One true God who is revealed in the precious pages of Scripture. But we do love and value the Word of God for in it we are led to our salvation (2 Cor. 7:10).

God’s Vision for CHBC: 3 Piers, 3 Pillars, and 3 Purposes

3 Purposes: Equipping Believers, Exalting Christ, and Extending the Gospel

And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. (Matthew 28:18-20)

The Great Commission, as the verses are typically known, contains one direct command, and three indirect commands. The one command is to make disciples. How do we make disciples? By baptizing and teaching. We baptize those who respond in repentance and faith to the good news of God’s redemption through the death and resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ. We then teach these new followers the demands of Scripture upon the lives of those who are believers.

This entire process begins with us going with the intent of making disciples. For the church to extend the gospel is not a program of missions or a ministry of certain individuals. The church fulfills the great commission as the members of the church go to their home, their job, their, grocery stores, their coffee shops, their gyms, their civic organizations, or anywhere their day takes them with the intent to plead with others on behalf of Christ, that they be reconciled to God (2 Cor. 5:20).

The work of extending the gospel is an every believer, everyday responsibility. Yes, the church should organize for gospel outreach through ministries, trips, and events. But the Great Commission was not given to an organization, but to disciples for them to make more disciples. Are you a disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ? Are you in the process of making disciples by going, seeing them baptized, and teaching?

By His Grace and For His Glory,

Pastor Mark
