God’s Vision for CHBC: 3 Piers, 3 Pillars, and 3 Purposes
3 Purposes: Equip Believers, Exalt Christ, and Extend the Gospel
“Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. 8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father,” (Philippians 2:5-11)
I have bolded for you the phrase, “For this reason, God highly exalted Him,” because if God exalts the Son, then how can we do less. Once forgiven of our sins, we ought to spend the rest of our lives doing what God has done, exalting Christ because He emptied Himself, humbled Himself, and died on the cross for our salvation.
Webster’s 1828 Dictionary defines exaltation as, “the act of raising high.” The Christian’s proper response of thankfulness for eternal forgiveness is to live in such a way that Jesus is raised high in our thoughts, words, and actions. In a personal way, CHBC calls this the pursuit of practical holiness. The believer pursues to live a life of personal holiness in the practice of everyday life. Choosing to speak, think, and act in all our days in the way Christ would.
As Christians we are part of a local congregation, whose purpose is also to exalt Christ. We attempt to exalt Christ by centering our worship on God and His redeeming work through Christ. We love one another as Christ does and take the command of our Savior in Philippians 2:5, to have His attitude of emptiness, humility, and other orientation.
The purpose of exalting Christ goes far beyond singing songs on Sundays. The purpose of exalting Christ becomes a lifestyle that affects home, work, church, and our witness in the world. CHBC exalt Christ to the glory of God.
