CHBC Connections for October 21, 2022

The Mission of CHBC – 3 Piers, 3 Pillars, and 3 Purposes
The three piers, or non-negotiables, upon which we believe the church is founded are the Centrality of the Scriptures, the Lordship of Christ, and the Glory of God. Last week the focus was on the centrality of the Scriptures in all we do. This week consider the necessity of the church’s foundation of Jesus Christ. Christ is head of the church. Jesus said of Peter’s confession of Christ as Lord was the rock upon which the church would be built. CHBC is committed to the Lordship and headship of Christ.

Associate Pastor for Hispanic Ministries Update
Our candidate for associate pastor for Hispanic ministries is Juan Panfil. Pastor Juan is already residing in the Oklahoma City metro, although his country of origin is Venezuela. The worship bulletin this Sunday will include an insert with more information and a picture of Pastor Juan and his wife. Take note of the times and opportunities to get to know Pastor Juan. And plan to be present at 5 PM Sunday evening as the church will vote on the question of calling Pastor Juan to service with CHBC.

Associate Pastor for Worship Ministries
Our newly elected search committee will be meeting again this week. Please pray for guidance as they look at our worship ministry needs, evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of our current worship ministry, as they review the job description for this position, as they determine the sources from which to seek resumes, and as they begin to formulate the questions to ask potential candidates.

Women’s Ministry Fall Brunch – Nov. 5 at 9:30 AM
Join our women for a time of fellowship and encouragement. See the website to sign up. Women’s Ministry Fall Brunch.

Absentee/Mail-in Voting Ballot Notarization – October 23
Jim Rosser, Notary Public, will be offering services for notarizing absentee or mail-in voting ballots on the Sunday morning of October 23. Jim will be available at the CHBC Welcome Center prior to Sunday school and worship, as well as after worship on both Sundays. You need to have followed all of the instructions so that your ballot is marked and inside your white envelope. After putting the white envelope in the yellow envelope, fill out the upper portion, but do not sign until you are standing in front of the notary. Bring this portion completed along with your green envelope, and valid form of a government issued ID.

Joint Youth and Adult Sunday School Breakfast – October 30, 2022
On Sunday, October 30 from 9-10 AM the CHBC Youth Ministry and the CHBC Adult Sunday school groups will meet together in the Activity Center. Please bring a breakfast item you could share with others. We will eat together, and have a joint lesson on the mission and purpose of Sunday school. We encourage you to sit with or near your classes, as part of the time will be spent in large group instruction, and part of the time will be spent in class discussion.

Marks of a Disciple – New Adult Sunday School Group begins November 6
We are beginning a new adult Sunday school group on November 6, 2022. This group will be led by Lance and Shawna Nuthman. This is an opportunity for adults of any age who have not been attending Sunday school to start attending or start attending again. This study comes from Lifeway Resources Marks of a Disciple small group Bible study. Come learn what it means to be a follower of Jesus.

Greet and Treat & Love Your Neighbor – October 31
CHBC each year encourages you to use the night that our neighborhoods fill up with Trick or Treaters to engage our neighbors with the love of Jesus. If you have young children take them through our neighborhood that night letting them hand out our Greet and Treat Bags. If your children have grown, make your home a Love Your Neighbor Station. Some people set up games, serve popcorn, serve hot chocolate, or make a fire pit, inviting Trick or Treaters and their families to stop for a moment, rest, and visit as they make their way around the neighborhood. It is an effective way to know your neighbors and give you an opportunity to put a treat in their bag and give them an invitation to join with CHBC for a Sunday of Worship.

Scripture of the Month - October
John 13:34-35, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” Each week CHBC says aloud a passage of Scripture during our morning worship gathering. This is done for two reasons. First, we are commanded in Scripture to encourage one another with the Word of God. Second, we want to emphasize the spiritual discipline of Scripture memory. Receive a text to your phone with this verse set to music by texting the word “CHBCVERSE” to the number (302) 207-SONG (7664).

Prayer
Turn the following verse into prayer for your CHBC family. Pray that each one would know the joy of salvation that comes only from God, and that they would be sustained with a willing spirit.

Psalm 51:12

“Restore to me the joy of Your salvation and sustain me with a willing spirit.”

The Mission of CHBC – Extend the Gospel

Acts 1:8 says, “but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.” How are you involved in gospel extension? As one who has trusted in Christ you have received power to be a witness. Trust in God’s Spirit in you as you live for Christ and speak for Christ to those around you.

Men’s and Women’s Bible Studies

Discipleship can extend for you beyond the Sunday School. The men and women of our church, including those who are teenagers, are encouraged to check out the men’s and women’s ministry opportunities at CHBC. Check out the website for more information about Men’s Bible Studies and Women’s Bible Studies.

Associate Pastor for Hispanic Ministries Update

The search committee is announcing that they will be presenting a candidate in view of a call on October 23rd. Next Sunday there will be information about the candidate presented in the worship bulletin. The conclusion of the evening service on October 23 will be when the church enters into a Member’s Meeting for the purpose of voting to call our candidate. If called, the candidate will begin serving at CHBC on November 1.

Associate Pastor for Worship Ministries

The Personnel Committee has begun the process of forming a search committee so that the church will have the opportunity to consider a new associate pastor who will be responsible for our worship ministry. That process begins with the Personnel Committee, along with the Senior Pastor and Deacon Body, determining names of potential candidates to serve on the search committee. The desire is to have people who represent a cross-section of the church, who are known to be faithful in their Christian commitment, and who exhibit a pattern of following the leadership of the Holy Spirit. Those names will be presented to the church in a Special Called Members’ Meeting to be held on Sunday night, October 3, at 6 PM. During the beginning of the interim process Danny Whitmill, assisted by David Trosper, and others will be coordinating our worship through music on Sunday morning and evening.

Capitol Hill on Bison Hill – Oct. 3

From 6-8 PM CHBC will be ministering to students at OBU. We began this ministry opportunity in the Spring of 2021 when OBU and other colleges skipped their Spring Breaks in order to protect their campuses during the COVID-19 pandemic. OBU continues to ask us back on campus just to bless their students. We will be present serving iced coffees and home baked treats from you. How can you serve? Make a dozen or more homemade snacks (no peanut butter, individually packaged) and bring them to the church by noon on October 3. Come to OBU with us and serve coffee, snacks, and visit with college students. We have seen several students make CHBC a home church, and we know of at least one student who accepted Christ as a result of his relationship with CHBC.

Prayer

Pray for one another to practice truth.

John 3:20-21

“For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God.”
