Why Does CHBC Exist?
Capitol Hill Baptist Church exists because in 1902 there were about twelve men and women who believed God was calling them to begin a new church located near SW 23rd and Harvey. Capitol Hill Baptist Church exists because for more than 120 years faithful servants of Christ have met, prayed, served, and shared the gospel with the lost of their community. Capitol Hill Baptist Church exists because there is still men and women, boys and girls, teens and students who are living without the knowledge and hope of the gospel of Jesus Christ. CHBC exists to equip believers like you, exalt Christ with one another, and to extend the gospel to our neighbors and the nations, all for the glory of God.

State of the Church Address – January 8 at 10:15 AM
Each year Pastor Mark’s first sermon of the year is a State of the Church Address. This annual sermon is designed to call the church to give special attention to spiritual needs the pastors of CHBC believe are necessary for the coming year. We encourage you to attend this service faithfully and prayerfully, with an expectation of the great things God has for CHBC in 2023.

Scripture of the Month - January
Titus 2:1, “But as for you, speak the things which are fitting for sound doctrine.”

During 2023 CHBC will be saying aloud verses from the book of Titus 2. CHBC quotes Scripture aloud during our morning worship gathering. This is done for two reasons. First, we are commanded in Scripture to encourage one another with the Word of God. Second, we want to emphasize the spiritual discipline of Scripture memory. The goal of 2023 is for you to be able to quote the entire second chapter of the Epistle to Titus.

The Mission of CHBC – 3 Piers, 3 Pillars, and 3 Purposes
CHBC exists for the glory of God to accomplish three purposes: To equip believers to know God’s Word, to exalt Christ privately and publicly, and to extend the gospel to their neighbors and the nations. The three piers we discuss are: The Centrality of the Scriptures, the Lordship of Christ, and the Glory of God. Our third foundation, or pier, is the Glory of God. All that God has done in establishing the church and all that we do in functioning as a church is to make known the full nature and character of God to the world. That is what it means to bring Him glory.

Christmas Eve Candlelight Service – 5 PM
Come to worship on Christmas Eve with your church family. Invite your friends and relatives to come and join with us as we honor the birth of Jesus through the singing of carols, reading of Scripture, and lighting of candles to remind us that Jesus truly is the light of the world.

Christmas Day Worship – 10:15 AM
CHBC will have worship on Christmas Day at the regular time. There will be no Sunday school groups prior to worship on Christmas Day. The worship service will be designed to keep our attention on the reason the church gathers to celebrate Christmas – the incarnation of the Lord Jesus Christ.

CHBC Resource Center – ESV Study Bible
The most essential tool for a person who wants to know God is his or her Bible. We want to encourage you to have a reliable and readable translation, and we want to encourage you to have a Study Bible that will explain historical backgrounds, deal with issues of authorship, discuss the purpose of the writing, and give you verse by verse explanation. Through a generous donation of an adult SS class the ESV Study Bible has been made available to you at no cost. These usually retail for over $100. If you can purchase one of these Bibles for any amount, then place your payment in the box located next to the Bibles. If you cannot purchase this at this time, but will use this, or need to give this to someone else, please do not hesitate. This is the beginning of what CHBC hopes will become a first-class Biblical Resource Center, providing the best in Biblical resources to you. Support that vision and your Biblical knowledge by taking one of these ESV study Bibles and paying what you are able.

Pray for the Search Committee - Associate Pastor for Worship Ministries
The search committee updated the church  this past Sunday. In this update it was shared that the committee had completed interviewing a candidate. They are making plans for this candidate to come to CHBC in View of a Call on Sunday, January 15. As the details are confirmed, the church will receive more information about that weekend, as well as more information about the candidate.

Lottie Moon Christmas Offering/World Missions Offering
Jesus Christ’s birth is the reason the church celebrates Christmas. He is the greatest gift because it is through Him alone that sinners are saved. This news needs to reach the end of the earth. Men and women of God have felt the call to full-time missionary service since the sending of the first disciples. When you give to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, or to World Missions Offering, you are putting dollar directly in the hands of missionaries who serve through the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. Some of the most dedicated followers of Christ serve our mission agency. Support their work by giving beyond your tithe to Lottie Moon or the World Missions Offering this month.

Scripture of the Month - December
John 1:1-3, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.” Each week CHBC says aloud a passage of Scripture during our morning worship gathering. This is done for two reasons. First, we are commanded in Scripture to encourage one another with the Word of God. Second, we want to emphasize the spiritual discipline of Scripture memory. Receive a text to your phone with this verse set to music by texting the word “CHBCVERSE” to the number (302) 207-SONG (7664).
